East Coast Blogging: What is The “Startup” Threshold?

  • llimllib · 1 year ago
The word "startup" is now a signal meaning something like "web 2.0 company that aims at acquisition or success via ad revenue" and not actually meaning what it used to mean, which I think is the source of confusion here.

i agree, when I hear start-up, I'm thinking new and the small guy, regardless of what industry. Either way I think of it in more of a time frame manner. That maybe a start-up period is 2 years long, after that they need a new name.

I would say if the company is profitable, employs more than a half dozen employees, and has over $100M in funding, then you are no longer a start-up.

You really are worried about the semantics of this, eh, Jimmy? I think we all called it pretty well on your last post where you asked this:

So yeah: size/profitability/number of years/etc all factor in. Kayak is borderline due to its size, but culturally and revenue-wise, they fit the prototype.

Yes I do seem a bit caught up on this don't I :)
But this article popped up and made me think about it a bit more

    Thanks for stopping by Jared
